Sporta App Guide: How to Scan, Value and Collect Cards

The Sporta app identifies a sports card from a photo, shows its estimated market value from recent sales, gives an AI condition pre-grade that is an estimate, not an official grade, and saves the card to a cloud-synced collection called the Vault. This guide covers each part of the app in the order you meet it.

Download Sports Card Scanner - Sporta from the App Store on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later; the App Store also lists Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 26 or later. The app is free to download and available in English. Sporta requires an account, and you sign in with Apple or with Google. Those are the only two options, so there is no separate email-and-password account to create, and your profile shows the name and email that your sign-in provider shares. The account matters because your collection is stored with it and synced to the cloud, which is what lets your Vault reappear when you replace your phone. Scan, Value, Collect

The onboarding boils Sporta down to three words. Scan promises to "Identify any card in seconds." Value says "Know exactly what it's worth." Collect invites you to "Build your digital vault." The sections below follow the same order.

What are the main screens in the Sporta app?

The Sporta app is built around Home, the scanner, the card detail screen and the Vault, with Search and Settings alongside. Home is the launch pad, holding your collection value, a large Scan a Card button and three market lists. The scanner handles the camera and your photo library. Every identified card opens a detail screen with its value, an AI grade that is an estimate and not an official grade, its sales history and key facts. The Vault holds the cards you decide to keep, organized into binders. Search lets you look up any card in the catalog without having it in your hand, and Settings covers purchases, sync, currency, support and your account. The table maps each screen to its job so you know where to look first.

How do you scan a card with Sporta?

To scan a card, tap Scan a Card on Home, point the camera at the front of the card and line it up inside the on-screen frame; the guide reads, "Make sure the front fits inside the frame." Sporta then asks for the back. That second photo is optional but worth taking, and the app's own tip is "Two photos = better results," because the back carries the set name, card number and copyright year, the most reliable clues for telling similar cards apart. You can also choose an existing photo from your library instead of using the camera. Cards can stay in penny sleeves, top loaders or grading slabs. While the AI works, you will see "Identifying card with AI… Reading player, set, number & variation."

Set up your light. Use soft, even light, and angle the card so no lamp or window reflects off its surface or its sleeve.
Use a plain background. A dark, uncluttered surface makes the card's edges easy to see.
Tap Scan a Card. Use the camera, or pick a photo you already took from your library.
Frame the front. Fill the frame without cutting off a border, and hold the phone parallel to the card so the image is not skewed.
Add the back. Flip the card and take the second photo when prompted. Skip it only if the back is blank or unreadable.
Wait for the result. Keep the app open while it reads the player, set, number and variation.

Tilt a slab or scuffed top loader a few degrees away from the light to clear reflections off the text. Sporta reads one card per photo, so work through a stack card by card. The sports card scanner page gives a quick overview of the scan flow.

What does Sporta show after a scan?

After a scan, Sporta shows what the AI read from the card and the catalog card it matched. The identification covers the player, year, brand and set, card number, variation or parallel, serial numbering such as 23/50, sport, team and position, plus flags for a rookie card (RC), an autograph, and memorabilia or a patch, along with any notable features and a short About This Card fact. The year shown is the copyright year printed on the card, not the player's draft year, so a rookie card can carry a different year from the season the player was drafted. Every scan also appears in Recent Scans on Home, even if you never add the card to your Vault.

Similar Match and "Is this the right card?"

When the catalog match is uncertain, the result is labeled Similar Match with a match percentage, and the app asks, "Is this the right card?" Treat a lower percentage as your cue to check the card number and parallel yourself. A frequent cause is a parallel that shares its photo and number with the base card, so compare border color, finish and any serial number with the suggestion. When a card is not in the catalog

Sometimes the AI can read a card that the catalog does not yet include. Sporta then shows the identification with the note "Identified by AI — not in our catalog yet, so there's no live market value." The app does not guess a number in that case. Use the identified player, set and card number as search terms for your own sold-listing research.

How do you read the card detail screen?

The card detail screen gathers everything Sporta knows about one card. The Value section shows an estimated market value from recent verified sales, with the weekly and 30-day change in green when it has risen and red when it has fallen. The AI Grade ring gives a 0–10 condition pre-grade with a Condition Breakdown of centering, corners, edges and surface, and the app labels it "Estimated pre-grade from photo analysis. Not an official grade." Prices by Grade lays out values from raw through graded condition. Recent Sales lists individual sold comps with grade and date, and Price History draws a sparkline you can drag across to see each sale. Card Details, About This Card and Parallels & Rarity fill in the facts, while Flip and Share handle viewing and sending.

Value and trends

Read the value as an estimate built from recent sales, not as an offer anyone has made you. The trend figures show direction. A sharp weekly jump after a big game can fade, so the 30-day change usually gives better context.

AI Grade

The ring shows one number from 0 to 10 with a grade word: 9.5 and above reads Gem Mint, 9 and above Mint, and 8 and above Near-Mint. The Condition Breakdown shows which of the four areas pulled the number down, and that matters: weak centering is a different problem from a surface scratch. The AI judges only what the camera captured, so glare can hide a fine scratch and a sleeve can blur the outline of a corner. Prices by Grade, Recent Sales and Price History

Prices by Grade answers "what would this card be worth in better or worse condition?", the core question behind any grading decision. Recent Sales shows whether the value rests on many sales or only a few. Price History turns those sales into a line; drag a finger along it to scrub through individual sales and spot an outlier. Card Details, About This Card and Parallels & Rarity

Card Details gathers the full identification in one list. About This Card offers a short fact about the card or player. Parallels & Rarity tells you whether your version is serial-numbered or unnumbered, the quickest check that you hold the variation you think you do.

Flip card switches between your front and back scans. Share builds a single image with both scanned sides, the card's details and its value, then opens the iOS share sheet so you can send it to a friend or post it.

How does the Vault organize your collection?

The Vault is Sporta's collection: every card you add from a scan lands there, stored with your account and synced to the cloud so it follows you to a new device. You organize it with binders, which you can create, rename and color-code; the app describes them as a way to "Group cards into a themed binder," such as one player, one team or cards you plan to grade. An All Cards view shows everything at once, and search finds a card inside your Vault. The Vault also tracks your total estimated collection value with a change chart you can switch between 1W, 1M, 3M, 1Y and ALL, alongside your card count, your binder count and the top mover in your collection.

What do the Home and Search screens show?

Home is the app's main screen. It shows your collection value, the large Scan a Card button, your Recent Scans and three market lists: Trending Now, Top Picks and Top Movers, the last showing the biggest price changes and refreshed daily. Search is for cards you do not have in hand. Browse by sport, or type a player, set or card, then narrow the results with filters for graded or raw, rookies only, era (modern or vintage), minimum grade and maximum price. Results sort by relevance, price from low to high or high to low, newest, or top grade. Market data behind both screens refreshes throughout the day from recent sales, so the lists shift as new sales arrive.

Search earns its place before a card show: look up your want list, filter to the grade you are after, and read Recent Sales so you arrive knowing what buyers have actually paid.

How do you change currency and settings?

Sporta shows values in US dollars, euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars or Japanese yen, converted with daily exchange rates; pick yours under Default Currency in Settings. The rest of Settings covers your account and support: Restore Purchases, Backup & Sync, Contact Us, which starts an email to support, Rate the App, Share App, the Terms and Privacy pages, Sign Out and Delete Account. Delete Account permanently removes your account and your whole collection, and it cannot be undone, so use it only when you are certain. If you just want to move to a new phone, sign in there with the same Apple or Google account instead, and your Vault comes back with you.

What should you know about purchases and privacy?

Sporta is free to download, and further use is available through in-app purchases, shown inside the app. If you reinstall the app or switch devices, Restore Purchases in Settings is the button to use. On privacy, card photos are sent over an authenticated connection to Sporta's cloud service, where Google's Gemini AI identifies the card and produces its estimated pre-grade, which is not an official grade. When you add a card to the Vault, compressed copies of your front and back scans are stored with your account so the Vault shows your actual card, and recent scans are cached on your device. The app asks through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt before enabling advertiser tracking, and it enables that tracking only if you allow it.

Card lookups go from Sporta's servers to a sports-card market-data provider, which receives the card details rather than your personal information. The privacy page explains how your data is handled.

What does the Sporta app not do?

The Sporta app does not buy or sell cards, link to marketplaces, send price alerts or push notifications, or export your collection as a CSV or PDF report. It does not submit cards for grading, issue official grades, authenticate autographs or detect fakes. It identifies sports cards only, so Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering and other trading card games are not covered, and it runs on Apple devices only, with no Android or web version. Scanning needs an internet connection, and each photo should show a single card, because bulk or multi-card scanning is not supported.
